My wife left me, and my father died on the very same day.
Twelve Years to Zero, Overnight
We always told each other that if there was ever anything wrong, we would talk about it. Whatever the problem was, we would sit down, have a conversation and try to work through it together. That’s what I believed we had built over twelve years.
Twelve years of memories, experiences, laughter, tears and a life we shared.
And then, somehow, it felt as though we had gone from twelve years to zero overnight.
One day, I believed we had a relationship where we could talk about anything. The next, I was facing a reality I never expected.
How do you make sense of that? How do you process the loss of someone who has been such a big part of your life for twelve years? How do you reconcile everything you thought you knew with the situation you suddenly find yourself in?
The hardest part is that you are left with so many thoughts and feelings, and sometimes more questions than answers.
For me, this wasn’t just about losing my marriage. It was about losing the future I thought we would have together, the familiarity of everyday life and the belief that, whatever happened, we would talk things through.
And when you’re already dealing with grief and other personal struggles, that kind of heartbreak can feel overwhelming.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only man who has experienced the pain of a relationship ending and struggled to find the words to explain it.
We talk about being strong, picking ourselves up and carrying on. But what happens when you don’t know how to do that? What happens when, behind closed doors, you’re hurting more than anyone realises?
Men feel that pain, too. We have emotions, we have questions, and sometimes we need someone to listen without judging us or expecting us to have all the answers.
That’s one of the reasons I created Men Cry. Because sometimes, before we can even begin to move forward, we need to be able to admit that we’re hurting.
