Sometimes You Just Have to Trust Someone
I was shopping at Lidl recently when a man came up to me and started asking about my e-bike.
While we were chatting, I noticed he was wearing an Andy’s Man Club wristband. I mentioned that I used to attend Man Down, but that I don’t anymore for personal reasons.
I could tell that he seemed to be having a rough time of things.
For whatever reason, I decided to do something a little unexpected.
I said to him, “Here, have a go on the bike.”
So he did.
He rode my e-bike around the car park a few times, and I could see that he absolutely loved it.
Now, before anyone says anything, yes… perhaps I was being a little too trusting!
I had just allowed a complete stranger to ride my £1,000 e-bike around a car park. 😂
I even jokingly told him, “There’s an AirTag on it.”
There wasn’t.
At least, there wasn’t at the time.
There is one inside it now. 😂
But the point of the story isn’t really about the bike.
It’s about that brief interaction between two strangers.
I don’t know what that man was going through. I don’t know his story, and I don’t know whether riding an e-bike around a car park for a few minutes changed anything for him.
But for those few minutes, he seemed happy.
Sometimes we don’t need to fix someone’s entire life.
Sometimes we can simply give someone five minutes where they can forget about everything else.
A conversation.
A laugh.
A bit of trust.
A chance to try something different.
You never really know what someone is carrying around inside.
So if you see someone who looks like they’re having a difficult day, don’t underestimate what a small act of kindness might mean to them.
And perhaps don’t lend them your £1,000 e-bike without an AirTag either. 😂
Sometimes it’s the little things that matter.
I said to him, “Don’t you go to Man Down?” He said no, explaining that he doesn’t like the name because he’s a man who wants to get back up and live!
Valid point, well made.
